PostSubject: _gaining_ weight   Sat May 10 2008, 13:28

When I was little, my weight was perfectly fine, up to the age of 10 or something. After that, I never really hit the 'normal' weight anymore. And since I'm an Ectomorph, I look even more skinny which doesn't really boost my self esteem (some say they don't notice it, but in fact I'm really shy up to a certain level).

Normally, I don't eat too much each day. A day of eating would look like this:
- Breakfast (2-3 sandwiches)
- Snack
- Lunch (4 sandwiches and fruit)
- Snacks, chips and such. 2 hours in between or something.
- Dinner
- Sometimes I eat 2 more sandwiches in the evening and 1 more fruit.

Now I've tried googling, but the only thing I found was to make my stomach get used to more food. The way to do that, as they told, was to eat something every hour. And since this came from a professional health forum, I took that advice and ate a sandwich every hour for 3 weeks long.

3 weeks later, I got sick. I felt really noxious and had very little hunger.
Ever since I recovered, when I eat I also feel noxious after eating something or even while eating. The will to eat just lowers it every time, cause feeling noxious every time I eat is just crap.

Now I'm here to ask you for advice, since there are some knowledged people out here.

Some more information of me:
- 17 years old
- 1.86m
- <= 60 kilo (I can't weigh atm)
- I don't do sports
- I've quit drinking alcohol
- I do not smoke (apart from what I breath in from friends and my surroundings)

Any advice is welcome, I'm willing to follow any routine that is best. I've got all time for it now I'm done with school (only exams left).

I know what it is like to have a small stomach. 5 weeks ago I was rarely finishing my meals, i always had left overs on my plate. But since starting my abs routine (and watching lots of survival programs) I eat anything that casts a shadow. Even when my stomach 'feels' full, I still try and eat more. Your stomach feeling full is mostly psychological. Some people are born with a disorder where they never feel full and they are very vulnerable to eating too much and becoming obese.

Sometimes I feel very bloated after eating a big meal and I have a big ol' belly when I stand up straight, but after about an hour all the food is digested and back to normal.

I would suggest starting with eating EVERY SCRAP of food that you normally eat, then as you get more used to that, increase your portion size etc.

Hope that helps.

Could it also be caused by the fact that I'm not moving enough, so I hold energy thus eating little portions?

Anyway, I'll try to overrule my 'full' feeling. You'll hear from me Smile

You ate a sandwitch every hour? Just thinking about it makes me a little noxious.
I don't know much about eating or gaining weight, though you might develope deficiency issues and diseases if you eat the same stuff all the time.

Vary your food, don't just eat sandwitches.
Also, if you vary you won't get sick of eating.

If you like to drink milk and eat peanut butter then you can get a huge amount of calories from those things alone; both are pretty calorie dense and have a respectable amount of protein.

No, food intake is a lot more important than the amount of training you do when you are trying to bulk. That's not to say that training isn't important; it obviously is, but unless you are eating enough then you will not see results.

Don't have to be a glutton, but you do have to consistantly be in the gym as well as eat consistantly, always having a good breakfast/lunch/dinner and eating inbetween is optional depending how much time you spend working out. Some people, no matter how much they eat just won't gain weight, the only sure way to put pounds on is by spending time in the gym. If you can't put weight on by eating, you'll need to start working out then. If you workout consistantly for a month and eat good breakfast/lunch/dinner everyday you won't have to worry.

Even 10 minutes a day, if you don't like overeating just workout hard 10 mins a day having only breakfast/lunch/dinner and you'll be putting weight on after a month.

No really, this isn't true. The number of people who have trouble putting on weight that just decide to increase their workout again and again till they see results is ridiculous. Not everyone needs to eat a lot to put on muscle, but if you do, it's the food that matters. Training more and more often just makes you more likely to burn yourself out or get an injury. In addition, if you are training every day you need to have a schedule that has you targetting different muscles on different days. If you do the same ones daily you are never going to see worthwhile results.

Nobody should have to work out daily to gain muscle.

Someone working out decently for 30 minutes 3x a week will still see results if they eat enough to fuel their muscle growth.

I believe you misinterpreted, I was trying to say. That for some people, eating alone isn't enough to gain weight, and gym work IS required for those select few. I never said anything about working out more and not eating more, you always have to eat to fuel the workout, but some people like me, I could eat everyday all day long every hour and see no result in weight gains. It's only when I put on my gloves and started lifting that I gained ANY weight at all, I didn't gain a pound for several years until I started going to the gym. You'll never gain weight by gym alone, and there are many people who don't even need to go for weight, but if blukkie has, the same problem I had. You don't need to completely bloat yourself to death in food every hour because it's just not healthy, but you're going to need to lift and eat proportionally for what you're working at.

You don't need to workout everysingle day, all I was saying even something as small as 10 mins a day if you eat right can put pounds on you. "Nobody should have to work out daily to gain muscle." and no one needs to, but to put on muscle some work at all is required.

The message I tried to send, that apparently got lost in translation is. For some people eating isn't enough to put muscle on, and you'll need SOME amount of gym work to gain weight. I never said anything about overworking or not eating, just not stuffing your freaking face with a meal every hour when you're just casually working out. I don't know how you misunderstood my post, I thought I made it pretty clear... Neutral

Only eat every hour if you intend to workout consistently the entire day, otherwise you'll just get sick, no need for that much fuel if you get up in the morning and do a few pushups situps etc. I believe people are putting so much stress on food here, for serious working out which is hours in the gym. Not everyone is in the gym hours, and even when they are, most of the time they aren't working out hardcore. Not everyone is a body builder, and most people casually workout do not need to be eating that much food.

If you're like me, eating isn't going to give you pounds, it's eating AND gym work. Just make sure you eat healthy and proportionally. Anytime you get hungry go eat, don't force it. I rarely, if ever, met anyone as skinny as I was. There's nothing I could do to gain weight even though I did grow taller, my only solution was gym work. That is when I starting gaining muscle, and I did start eating a lot more. Usually when I felt hungry I wouldn't go eat, I'd just ignore it and keep doing what I was doing then eat a lot later. I ate healthier, proportion wise and quality foods, as well as a lot of working out and the first week I was putting pounds on.

If you're not willing to do any gym work though, I don't know how to solve your problem.

This is true, but it doesn't mean you need to target different muscles everysingle day of the week. What I do is, upperbody monday, then lowerbody tuesday, then back and forth.

When I turned 17 I was 6 feet tall and pounds under your current weight. My parents said I looked like I came out of auschwitz. And I weighed this while eating as much as pancakes/3+eggs/bagles all in one meal and consistantly eating a crap load all day. Never gained a single pounds no matter what I did. I was like a black hole sucking in everything but did I gain weight? Nope. When I start in the gym though, my body just goes nuts with weight gains...I stopped working out for a long time because I was addicted to the gym and didn't like how fast I was gaining weight. You don't need to be a addict, just do whatever you see proper for yourself. It only takes a little work for us skinny folk to put those pounds on in there, eating+gym together. And as vurtne once told me, that thing called sleep helps also, goodnight. Sleep
